Raphael J. Basso, Esq., M.B.A., Firm Principal

A native of New York’s Dutchess County and graduate of Arlington High School, Raphael Basso was a consistent member of the Honor Roll, establishing his reputation as a top achiever early in his life. As captain of both the varsity football team and the varsity lacrosse team, he excelled not only in highly demanding academics but also the most rigorous athletics where his leadership skills played an important role in attaining success.

As an extremely motivated competitor, Raphael then spent the next period of his life earning accolades from Union College in Schenectady, New York where he was recruited to play both football and lacrosse at the Division III level where maintaining high academic achievement was a requirement. Also pursued by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut where he eventually became a member of their outstanding Division I Lacrosse Team, which ranks among the best within the highest echelon of college sport. He graduated from their School of Business and Engineering with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

While attending law school in Miami, Florida, Raphael gained invaluable experience with two prestigious legal internships: at the National Labor Relations Board as well as the Complex Business Litigation Division of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida. While at the NLRB, he was a key contributor to field examiners, attorneys and the Resident Officer, assisting in the processing and handling of unfair labor practice charges; conducting interviews of key witnesses; preparing confidential affidavits; and assisting attorneys in preparation for board hearings and high stakes trials.

While at the 11th Circuit Court, he researched multiple complicated commercial law issues; drafted bench briefs and memoranda of law; attended conferences and trials to assist the judge with discovery and exhibits.

Both of these highly sought-after positions provided compelling insight into the pivotal mechanisms of the inner workings of courts, which influence final judgments. He earned both his Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration degrees with special emphasis on management of professional sports from St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami, Florida.

During summer school breaks and upon his return to the Hudson Valley after graduation with his Law and MBA degrees, Raphael worked at the prestigious law firm founded by his father, renowned trial attorney, John J. Basso, Esq. While serving as a legal intern performing investigation and in-court trial assistant duties with his father, Raphael provided trial and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) preparation support for catastrophic personal-injury cases while managing financial and tax issues for the law practice and its property. Concurrently, he also initially served as law clerk providing legal services to a variety of law firms specializing in criminal and serious injury personal-injury cases. Once admitted to practice law, Raphael continued as an attorney in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation.

This critical experience contributed to Raphael’s ambitions to lead the law firm of Basso Law to represent both accident/injury cases and clients confronting serious charges of criminal law and DWI (driving while intoxicated) – defending their rights in all Dutchess County Courts, as well as select courts in the greater Hudson Valley.

Today, Basso Law uses the industry’s most sophisticated sources of legal research. Enhancing the firm’s competence in leading-edge solutions, affiliations with today’s most respected world-renowned national and regional organizations of legal expertise provide Basso Law with vital support, which can contribute to the best possible outcome of your case.

Basso Family Tradition in the Law

John J. Basso, Esq., Firm Advisor with his son, Raphael J. Basso, founder and firm principal of Basso Law Group

From an early age, Raphael Basso was made aware of the hard work and ethics required of an attorney, by his father, John J. Basso, Esq., whose reputation with clients, attorneys, and judges for professionalism, preparation, hard work and attentiveness to his clients made a strong impression on Raphael. These same attributes also made Basso Law one of the premier law firms in the Hudson Valley.

Raphael also developed an intense love of the sport of lacrosse from his father, John, who instilled in him a deep appreciation of its historic and spiritual significance. John Basso was a member of the storied Hobart College Lacrosse Team, which in 1972, won the first of 14 national championships, resulting in John’s eventual admission to the Hobart College All-Athletic Hall of Fame.

spacerThe late John J. Basso, Esq., firm mentor

John J. Basso, Esq. shared his magnanimous talents with the Hudson Valley community by serving on the Arlington District School Board; coaching youth soccer, basketball and lacrosse; and eventually becoming lacrosse coach at Arlington High School. John is the founder and president of Arlington-LaGrange Youth Lacrosse Club, which has exposed thousands of boys and girls to the sport, many of whom have gone on to play at the collegiate level. John was also a member of two select committees for Dutchess County and New York State for Judicial Selection and served as President of the Dutchess County Bar Association, where he organized the Dutchess County Bar Association Legal Clinic Program.

John J. Basso, Esq. has had repeated selections as a New York Super Lawyer in the accident and personal injury field while working at his law firm, Basso Law. Over the course of his 35-year career, John J. Basso, Esq. achieved over 30 multi-million dollar results through both hard-fought trials and sophisticated settlement proceedings in multiple catastrophic personal-injury cases. John J. Basso, Esq. also produced and hosted his own legal television show, “The Law and Your Money”, which was viewed for more than fifteen years by over half a million people each week in New York’s Hudson Valley.

More than anything, however, Raphael was influenced by his father’s work ethic driven by a sincere concern for clients in need or whose mistakes had landed them in trouble with the law – mistakes like driving while intoxicated (DWI); driving while ability impaired by alcohol or drugs (DWAI); or serious violations of vehicle and traffic laws. Raphael learned that there is no substitute for genuine compassion and the determination to secure the best possible result in bad situations. To Raphael, this family tradition is ultimately what has inspired him to emulate his father’s professional character of profound compassion and unrelenting obsession for winning – both on the playing field and in a court of law.

As part of his family tradition of service, Raphael Basso involves himself in community outreach for the benefit of the public. Since 2005, as Volunteer Coach and an active Member of the Board of the Arlington-LaGrange Youth Lacrosse Club, he has shared his knowledge of the sport, promoting its history and influence in engaging young people to aspire to higher levels of personal achievement and helping players and their families who needed legal assistance of any type. Raphael Basso is currently Legal Counsel to the Arlington-LaGrange Youth Lacrosse Club and a volunteer youth coach.

Raphael is currently admitted to practice law in the state of New York as well as in Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of New York. Having learned from the example set by his father, Attorney John J. Basso, who exemplified powerful strategies in legal defense, forceful arguments to protect client rights and impressive strength in courtroom presentations, Raphael relies on a winning combination of knowledge and aggressive representation to achieve the best outcome for every client, including both victims of negligence in personal injury cases, as well as those facing the most serious criminal charges. He is available 24/7, with free initial telephone consult.
